Negotiated Skills Development (NSD) is a module in MSc Information and Technology that gives flexibility to the students to choose a subject of their own choice in which they want to specialize in and executing certain projects by implementing the theoretical knowledge gained not only by self-study (Online/Offline) but also by attending undergrad lectures. This module makes them confident and ready to step out in the real competitive world where they can stand out from the crowd.
Rationale:
In this module, I want to test and develop my skills in the Home Security System (IP Cameras), where I will understand the fundamental principles and implement them by actually doing the installation and commissioning of the cameras at my residence on my own.
The reason behind choosing this project is that, due to upsurged crime rates within the society, surveillance systems have become a necessity, It has a vast range of applications which can be used for both personal and commercial purposes. Even police officials are increasingly relying on CCTV cameras as its features like mobile surveillance aid them to notice any suspicious activity in the surroundings and stop any potential crime before happening. All in all, the CCTV system provides a great sense of security and helps in building a safe and sound society.
Before executing my project, I had a discussion with the faculty members and after understanding the importance of the contract, I had created one and posted it below to outline the strategies I will be implementing to make it successful.

Description

In
what format will you evidence your Learning outcome?
|
Date
of completion
|
To
gain valuable skills in networking (30%)
|
As
a complete beginner in networking and Internet protocols, I will attend
lectures and complete tutorials and exercises to learn how to build the
network (wired/wireless) by connectioning or by configuring routers, internet
settings, wireless adapters and PCs for networking.
|
The
process will be described on my blog along with the snapshots of the progress
at each and every stage to evident the understanding.

|
To
understand the fundamental conceptsand principles behind Home based security
Systems. (20%)
|
I
will carry out independent research through books and online resources to
gain an understanding of working of home security systems and designing
solutions, thereafter, implementing them to safeguard the life and property
of individuals. For this I am using both dome and bullet IP camera of Make:
Hikvision.
|
The
principles will be explained through the online blog and the strategies will
be applied on the whole setup to make it work properly.

|
To
adhere to the safety guidelines of the products while using them. (10%)
|
Each
product has their own set of safety guidelines to follow when it comes to
operating them, I will follow all the warnings, cautions and notices enclosed
with the product to avoid any accident or health hazard.
|
The
final product will be an evidence that all guidelines have been followed and
the setup is working fine.

Installation
and commissioning (40%)
|
I
will design the work layout by making choice of appropriate hardware and
software, like routers, switches, LAN or WAN networking to ensure proper
functioning of the whole setup. Also, I will figure out a suitable
communication medium to transmit the signal with no, or least distortion as
possible. I am also planning to add some extra data security functions in the
existing setup to ensure it is not misused by any intruder and is 100% safe
for the end user.
|
I
will demonstrate it by showing the view of the installed products on the
desktop or android or iOS platforms. And include some guidelines for securing
the data from any third person to avoid any mis happening. An evaluation of
this will be described through the presentation and via the online blog.
